Elia Magrinelli, Ph.D.

Hi, I am Dr. Elia Magrinelli, and I am a Molecular Biologist with a Ph.D. in Developmental Neurobiology working as a Genomics Data Scientist.

Fascinated by the intricate series of events needed to make a fully functioning brain, I pursued my first academic steps in the field of brain development research. In time, I have made contributions to explore cortical and cerebellar development from multiple perspectives.

During these studies I have developed a keen interest in data science and bioinformatics, first as an exploratory method and then as an advancement of technology, biology and medicine.

Ultimately I became a full-time data scientist at SOPHiA GENETICS. Here I am contributing to explore novel bioinformatics solutions improving data-driven medicine solutions.

Who am I?

After obtaining a Master in Biology at the University of Milan-Bicocca (Italy) in 2012, I entered a Ph.D. program at the Institute of Biology Valrose of Nice (France) and started dedicating my academic career toward the neurodevelopment field using the approach of molecular biology. At the conclusion of the Ph.D. studies in 2016, I joined the University of Geneva (Switzerland) and later the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) where I continued my research on brain development and specialized as well in data science for genomics as my main method of investigation. This ultimately led me to work as a genomics data scientist at SOPHiA GENETICS (Switzerland).

I have always been interested in science communication, an activity that, up to this day, brought me to perform a diverse set of experiences, from writing scientific articles aimed at a large audience, from organizing interactive activities for schools and developing online seminars and podcasts on the subject of academia and science called BioRoom.

When I am outside of the lab I find as many chances I can for hiking, which is also where I take most of my photography inspirations. Martial arts and combat sports has been always a great part of my hobby activity, thus in 2021 I have started the volunteering endeavour of teaching a mixed martial arts class at the Judo Club Annemasse
